The Melody At Night, Without You

by Samuel Jersak

Jazz connoisseurs will immediately recognize the title of this record. Unmistakable is the proximity to the album with which Keith Jarrett once returned from a several-year illness-related break: “The Melody At Night, With You”. As with Jarrett, the pieces of the Great American Songbook are also the center of the solo work of Samuel Jersak. After a period marked by experiences such as breakup and inner conflict, Jersak has now wholeheartedly transferred his memories of this time to music. He does not overload the predominantly balladic standards with meaning. He lets them confidently and intelligibly tell their own universal and timeless story. These clever as well as carefully-reduced-to-their-core melodies characterize less a life than an attitude to life. And that is exactly what makes them relatable and thus an inspiration.
